Greenhouse Gas and Energy Policy

At BlueScope Steel’s two principal steelmaking sites in Australia and New Zealand – Port Kembla Steelworks and New Zealand Steel – a Greenhouse Gas and Energy Policy has been deployed.

The Greenhouse Gas and Energy Policy commits these sites to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy efficiency.  Specific commitments include:

  • Setting targets to reduce greenhouse gas intensity and improve energy efficiency.
  • Ensuring greenhouse gas intensity and energy efficiency are criteria in the evaluation of acquisitions, mergers, agreements, new projects and contracts.
  • Reducing greenhouse gas intensity and energy use through innovative design and efficient operating practices.
  • Monitoring, evaluating and reporting greenhouse gas emissions and energy intensity.

Both sites are currently developing and implementing programs aimed at implementing this policy.

Greenhouse gas and energy consumption are also integral components of the Environmental Management System at North Star BlueScope Steel, our joint venture steelmaking plant in the United States.  Program management teams have been actively pursuing emission and consumption reductions through process improvements, new technologies, and innovative designs.

As large energy users, the Company’s Western Port, Port Kembla and Springhill operations also prepare energy efficiency plans in accordance with relevant State and Federal energy efficiency laws.
