LTI Safety Record Achieved for Iron Monarch Straddle Carriers

Allied Shipping Services Company (ASSCO), which maintains our fleet of Straddle Carriers used to load and discharge steel slabs from the Iron Monarch, has achieved a record two years lost time injury (LTI) free to the end of September.

ASSCO has come from an LTI rate of 158 in 2004 to zero. “We are all aware of how much effort it takes to achieve our safety goals,” said Mario Blasi, Manager Ports. “So, it is with much satisfaction that I'm able to report that, to the end of September, ASSCO had recorded zero LTIs and medically treated injuries – a great achievement. ASSCO is a step closer to achieving zero harm for all those working in their operations.”

ASSCO employees work at maintenance facilities at both Port Kembla in New South Wales and Western Port in Victoria.

New Caledonia celebrates 10 years LTI free

The Caledonian BlueScope Steel team celebrated 10 years lost time injury free at the Numbo site, Noumea, in early August.

According to President Pacific Region, Denis Etournaud, this milestone is truly an example for other Caledonian companies where industrial accidents still occur.

“At BlueScope Steel New Caledonia, everyone is aware of the risks of working in an industrial environment, which is why there is such a focus on a safe workplace,” Denis said. “Safety is not just limited to regulations but has become an integral part of the corporate culture.

“We are working within the framework of a responsible company; one in which each one of us cares about one another and where safety remains a priority for everyone.”

Marketing & Development Manager Didier Grosgurin encouraged employees to keep the focus on safety: “This performance proves we are on the right track. That’s why we must carry on and certainly not rest on our laurels.”

Record Safety, 30th Anniversary and a New Addition

This has been a year of great milestones and celebration for the Northern Region business segment of Butler Buildings, North America.

In August, the team at Annville, Pennsylvania celebrated its 30th anniversary of the plant’s opening and during the month, record despatches of 7,084 tonnes of steel were shipped to Butler customers. “This is a great effort by the team, which is truly committed to providing excellent service to our customers,” said Greg Robinson, Regional General Manager.

By September, the team achieved two years lost time injury (LTI) free, or 1.3 million hours.

“Our tremendous improvement on the safety front comes down to the dedication of our employees to make this workplace an injury free environment. With the assistance and leadership of Kristie Keast and our local Safety Manager Bill Zeigler, our whole team has embraced BlueScope Steel’s approach to managing safety,” said Greg.

To cap off a strong safety result, the 40,000 square foot addition to the plant was officially opened in October.
