Sharing Our Safety Journey with Grocon

Since being appointed a Director of BlueScope Steel last September, Daniel Grollo has been particularly impressed by our safety journey.  Daniel is Chief Executive Director of Grocon Pty Ltd, one of Australia’s largest privately owned development and construction companies, and arranged a visit for 50 of Grocon’s senior leaders to learn about safety at BlueScope Steel.

The group was welcomed by Noel Cornish, President Australian and New Zealand Industrial Markets, and hosted by a number of BlueScope Steel leaders who shared their proud safety stories, experiences and learnings.

The visitors spent a couple of hours walking the floor at the Springhill Works and at the Steelworks’ Slabmaking, Hot Strip Mill and Plate Mill operations.

Daniel thanked the BlueScope Steel team for openly sharing their safety journey experiences. He commented on how the visit would be instrumental in helping Grocon progress its own safety improvement journey.

Steel Industry’s Chain of Responsibility

Australia’s three leading steel companies, BlueScope Steel, OneSteel and Smorgon Steel have formed a Transport Safety Network Group to reduce heavy transport industry risk exposures.

“Steel companies are significant road freight users. This is a great example of industry participants combining to proactively improve safety and combat ever-increasing road risk challenges,” Ingilby Dickson, Vice President Global Logistics and Procurement, said.

The Transport Safety Network Group will continue the excellent work done to promote safe road transport load restraint procedures and develop and implement an Australian Steel Industry Chain of Responsibility Code of Practice.

Chain of Responsibility (CoR) seeks to engage industry participants throughout the entire transport supply chain – from the packer to the consignee/receiver - in adopting measures to mitigate heavy vehicle road accidents and infrastructure damage. The focus is on minimising accidents on Australian public roads.

The Code targets load restraint, load mass and dimensions, driver fatigue and contractor safety management. It also promotes awareness and training, the development of guidelines, audit capability and enhances existing management systems.

The initial rollout of the Code will primarily focus on our Logistics network in Australia.

Malaysia Focuses on Contractor Safety

In Malaysia, the level of safety around the manufacturing plant at Kapar continues to improve by establishing a team of contractor safety supervisors.

The team of 21 highly qualified and trained safety supervisors is committed to ensuring better contractor management and safety on site. They will conduct safety induction programs for contractors based on individual work requirements including working in isolation, working at heights and confined space entry.

BlueScope Steel Malaysia has also implemented an individual contractor passport system, which records all contractor safety training. This system now complements the work of the contractor safety supervisor team.

President BlueScope Steel Malaysia Simon Linge, handed out new safety vest uniforms to the supervisors. “We have shown great success in managing the safety of our employees. The appointment of the contractor safety supervisors is to ensure we share the same success in managing the safety of our contractors, and to educate them on the issues of working safely.”
